Free NBA League Pass
Who’s thinking about basketball in early August? Probably not many of you. I must admit I wasn’t, until recently. But with a game purchase, the right Amex card, and fifteen minutes or so, basketball fans can pick up NBA League Pass, normally $14.99 monthly, for the entire season for free. Even better, we can add a few bucks or rewards along the way. The only two ingredients necessary before following the below steps is holding an Amex Business Platinum card (170K offer currently) and maybe a bit of video game fandom. And if you don’t hold the card, there are many reasons to obtain one. Let’s get at it.
Steps for Free NBA League Pass
Note: Unlocking of the NBA League Pass subscription comes from the purchase of the limited edition NBA 2K23 game mentioned in Step 8 not from having an Amex card. All of the other steps will help you earn/save more along the way.
Step #1: Go To Your Favorite Online Portal…
…for earning rewards on Dell purchases. My favorite portal is Rakuten to earn Membership Rewards. While they only pay out quarterly, rewards track reliably and quickly. Plus, customer service is competent if there are any snags. Anyway, find Dell on your preferred portal and click to shop there.
Step #2: Add Xbox Digital Gift Cards to Your Shopping Cart
Search for and add Xbox digital gift cards (at least $150) to your shopping cart. Apply any Dell discount codes and/or Dell rewards – GAME10 code is currently active for 10% off.
Step #3: Check Out with Your Amex Business Platinum
Use your Amex Business Platinum card info to make the purchase. Prior to purchasing, ensure you have activated your Dell benefit with Amex online.
Step #4: Obtain Your Digital Xbox Gift Card Code
After your purchase is complete, log in to your Dell Digital Locker. Click on the digital gift card you want to redeem (see above) and copy the license key.
Step #5: Redeem Your Digital Xbox Gift Card Code
Click this link (above the license key) to head over to Microsoft for redemption. Paste the license key in the box (displayed above) and click Next. Your redemption is confirmed and balance updated.
Step #6: Repeat Steps #4 and #5
Since Dell sells digital Xbox gift cards at a $100 maximum denomination, you’ll need to redeem another one if you don’t already have sufficient Microsoft gift card balance. If that’s the case, repeat Steps #4 and #5 until you have a $150 balance.
Step #7: Go To Your Favorite Online Portal…
…for earning rewards on Microsoft Store purchases. Again, Rakuten is my favorite, and I’ve earned rewards from purchases using Microsoft gift card balance. Click through to the Microsoft Store.
Step #8: Pre-Order NBA 2K23 Championship Edition
This is what triggers the free NBA League Pass subscription. Search for NBA 2K23 Championship Edition (currently $149.99) and add the pre-order to your basket. Ensure you buy this version of the game – it’s the only one that includes NBA League Pass. You can check by reviewing the edition’s details. I recommend saving a screenshot of the NBA League Pass instructions toward the bottom for future reference. Check out, ensuring that your Microsoft balance is used for the purchase.
Step #9 Follow Up!
According to the Xbox site, NBA 2K23 releases on 9 September, so activate/download the game to your Xbox starting then. Within five days of redemption (but no earlier than 27 September), the NBA League Pass code will be delivered to the email address associated with the NBA 2K account. From there, redeem the NBA League Pass code as instructed.
Conclusion
Some of you may be thinking “hey, that’s not free, that’s just a rebate” or something similar. Call it what you want. In my situation, I obtained my Amex Business Platinums for lucrative Membership Rewards welcome offers and subsequently cashed out. I would’ve gone after these welcome offers even if the Dell credit wasn’t offered. I consider that free in my situation. And of course, many will have better uses for their Dell credits or Xbox gift cards than a $150 video game. But many gamers, including this very casual one, will enjoy watching free NBA League Pass (normally $199.99 a year on its own) for the entire 2022-2023 season and earning portal rewards twice along the way. And above all, I believe Luka will deliver this year.
