Why You Should Get The Amex Gold & World Of Hyatt Card Now, Like Right Now

You should get the World of Hyatt and Amex Gold cards right now, like right now!  That sounds extra pumpy doesn’t it?  It does, it does…I can not disagree with you there.  That doesn’t make it untrue though.  Now is the best time to grab the World of Hyatt or Amex Gold card as long as you fall into a certain subsect of person. Let me explain.

Amex Gold Card

The Amex Gold card is one of my favorites, if not favorite, cards.  It checks a lot of the best boxes in the spending realm.  Earning 4X at US supermarkets, up to $25,000 per calendar year, is tough to beat.  Throw in 4X at restaurants, plus 3X on airfare booked directly with airlines, and you see what I am talking about.

I would recommend getting this card to pretty much anyone that does a decent amount of spend at the grocery store.  But right now may be the best time ever.  That is because you would get a nice double dip of the statement credits. The airline incidental credit is based on calendar year.  So you could get one in 2020 and 2021 with only one annual fee being billed.

While this is true of all Amex cards that have airline incidental credits I point to the Amex Gold in particular.  That is because they are changing things up starting next year.  Currently you get a $100 airline incidental credit each calendar year. Starting next year that will be replaced with a $10 per month Uber credit.  But, the $100 airline incidental won’t be phased out until 2021.  So you would have a few days left to get the $100 airline incidental this year and it would reset again on January 1, 2021.  You would also get the Uber credit next year as well.  If you wait till next year to sign up then you would only get one airline incidental before it goes away.

Since this is the last chance to double dip the airline incidental credit now is the time to get the Amex Gold if you haven’t had the card before. It may be worth getting even if you have had it before too.  The welcome offer is as high as 65,000 through referrals.

If you are worried about the card getting to you in time to make the needed airline incidental spend sometimes Amex will give you the card number after approval.  It never hurts to ask!

World of Hyatt Card

The World of Hyatt program has made some big announcements recently with their program.  The year of 2021 will be the year of Globalist!  If you have any interest in chasing top tier World of Hyatt status next year, and you don’t have the World of Hyatt card already, then now is the time to get it.  That is because new accounts get 10 elite night credits next year (normally only 5 per year) plus the 50,000 point welcome offer.

That would mean you would need to only earn 20 more nights to get top tier status in 2021! I broke down how you can do it with as little as 7 nights in a hotel too.

The World of Hyatt is one of the best Chase cards available and I always put it towards the top of my recommend list.  But there is a once in a lifetime chance right now that can greatly reduce what is needed to earn the best top tier hotel status out there.  This is an opportunity we will likely never see again and you can fairly easily get status for two years by doing it.

I will preface and say don’t chase it unless you know you can use Globalist status.  Sometimes we fall into hype traps in this hobby and then get something that doesn’t fit our needs. If you spend 10+ nights in a full service Hyatt hotel a year already then I would give it some though for sure. If you spend less than that then don’t give this a second though.  Also remember that you have to be under Chase 5/24 to be eligible.

Final Thoughts

While the end of the year always offers some opportunity with new card welcome offers these two are unique to 2020.  You will never see an opportunity like this again for the World of Hyatt or Amex Gold cards. Make sure they work into your plans before diving in though.

If you spend enough on groceries and wanted the Amex Gold anyway, then now is your chance. It may be worth getting even if you are not eligible for the welcome offer.

If you are chasing World of Hyatt status next year, and are under Chase 5/24, then signing up for the card will make that path as easy as it has ever been.  If you are not chasing status with Hyatt then there is no rush to grab the card.

As always, do what makes the most sense for you. Hopefully I provided you with the info you need to make that decision.

  1. If u apply now for WOH, then u rule out the 2nd $15k spend for cat. 1-4 which is activated from your anniversary date through end of year…leaving only days to spend 15k. Just something to think of long term.

    • If you wait you are worse off though since it resets on 1/1/22 for everyone anyway. So if you signed up in March you would only have until December to earn the one and then it would reset on 1/1/22. So the longer you wait the worse it gets. Here are the terms:

For new accounts opened in 2021, you, as the primary cardmember, will have from your account open date in 2021 through December 31, 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases and earn a Free Night Award. On January 1, 2022 your spend total will reset to $0, and the time period for you to spend $15,000 to earn a Free Night Award will run from January 1 through December 31 of each calendar year.
