40% Off My New Floor

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about saving almost 50% off the cost of flooring for my loft at Home Depot. That day, I combined discounted gift cards, a great sale and portal cashback to drop a $377 purchase down to just $197. It was fantastic.

Well this week I finally had that flooring installed and of course we needed foam for below the flooring and we also decided to add tile to the upstairs bathroom. This meant that it was back to Home Depot for me, but this time I was able to utilize another deal.

I wrote the other day about how best to utilize the Home Depot Amex Offer which gives a $15 statement credit on a purchase of $75 or more. Thankfully we have quite a few cards synced with that offer, so we strategically purchased $75 Home Depot gift cards and then used them to purchase the materials.

In the end, the cost of our tile, plus all materials needed for the flooring came to $151. Because we used the Amex Offer, our cost was $121. (We receive 2 x $15 credits from the Amex Offer.) I could have saved more money by ordering supplies online using a portal, however this purchase was done at the last minute.

The Math

So now lets look at the total cost of my house’s new flooring including all purchases. I’ll be combining the math above with the math from my original post.

  • Normal Cost of all materials: $528.80
  • My out of pocket cost: $318.42
  • Total savings: $210.38
  • Savings percentage: 39.8%

Analysis

While the Amex Offer was convenient, I could have achieved a very similar discount by purchasing discounted gift cards like I did a few weeks ago when I purchased the bulk of the flooring. (Meaning this is generally reproducible.) Since the tile and materials were a last minute purchase, having the Amex Offer simplified things.

I could have also saved even more money by purchasing the items online and then picking them up in-store, but I needed everything quickly and walking in to purchase everything was more convenient. There is a also possibility of using a Lowe’s mover’s coupon in some areas as well, but none of my local Home Depot stores take them anymore.

Note: The flooring shown in the photos is back on sale for $.58 per square foot which is only $.01 more than I paid for it. If you are interested, here is a direct link.

Conclusion

Part of my purpose with this blog is to show how you can save money on everyday purchases. By combining sale prices, portal cashback, Amex Offers and discounted gift cards, I was able to easily save 40% off the purchase. and with a little more time and effort I probably could have gotten that number closer to 50%. In the end, I am happy with my savings, although it cost me more to get the flooring installed than it did to purchase it!
