Intercontinental Hong Kong Closed

It’s been almost 5 years since Intercontinental Hotels sold their flagship Hong Kong property to a group of investors for $938M. Sitting on the edge of Victoria Harbour on the Kowloon side, the hotel got its start as The Regent Hong Kong before rebranding in the early 2000s to Intercontinental.

Following the sale in 2015, we waited several years for an announcement about the fate of the hotel and it finally came in 2018. At that time it was announced Intercontinental Hong Kong would close in 2020 and reopen in under a new brand. Now, we know the exact date of closure is April 20.

Regent Hong Kong Reborn

While IHG will continue to manage this property, the brand will be changing back to an old familiar one. In 2018 IHG bought a 51% stake in Regent Hotels and they plan to bring that brand back to the shores of Victoria Harbour. The new Regent Hong Kong (former Intercontinental Hong Kong) is now expected to open in 2022.

A view from a Harbour View room! I only scored this upgrade once on three tries, but it was special!

I have stayed at Intercontinental Hong Kong three times now. My first stay was solo, my second was with my dad and the last was with my wife and daughter! During each of my stays there were rumors of the hotel’s closure but it took all of this time for it to finally happen.

The Intercontinental Hong Kong has a stunning location, old school lush rooms and stuffy service. It’s often filled with important businessmen and wealthy Chinese tourists. It’s a hotel that for me is a great mix of old school luxury along with Eastern and Western cultures. I always felt a bit out of place (it’s no Grand Hyatt Hong Kong), but that didn’t stop me from loving the place.

My Favorite IHG Hong Kong Moment

Each of my three stays at the Intercontinental Hong Kong came on nights when rates were $600+ USD. I used unrestricted IHG free night certs from their credit card (RIP) for each stay, which got me into a base room. Harbour view rooms are plentiful, but good luck getting the upgrade for free! I only got a Harbourview once, but it was so worth it!

I visited with my dad in 2016 and finally got to take my family to the hotel for a night in 2019! The views from the lobby are stunning as expected.

My second visit to the hotel came on my dad’s actual birthday and after a little begging they gave it to me. He hadn’t been to Hong Kong since his day’s of serving in Vietnam and was mesmerized by how things had changed. Watching him sit at the window in the room and stare out at the skyline trying to pick out things he recognized is a treasured memory.

Intercontinental Hong Kong Closed – Bottom Line

Each of my three stays at the Intercontninetnal Hong Kong have reminded me that I am not really a fancy person, but I like fancy hotels. This is a true classic and I can’t wait to see what she becomes when Regent Hong Kong opens in 2021. I’m saving up my IHG points now! 🙂

  1. The IC HK has always been one of my favorite hotels in the world. I have stayed there many many times. All using the IHG free nights or points. The last time was NY Eve 2017. The fireworks seen from the hotel podium were absolutely spectacular and breath taking. I have many fond memories of staying there.
