Posts That Caught My Eye
Quick Tip: Don’t buy GiftCardMall Visa cards (except as a gift)
This is not good news although I have personally moved on from purchasing these cards. It is sad to see people getting stuck with non-pin cards and also people having their accounts shutdown. Best to avoid GCM for Visas completely for now. Without pins these cards are basically useless.
American Reduces Mileage Earning on British Airways and Iberia After All
The lowest fare British Airways and Iberia tickets will now earn as low as 25% mileage if credited to American. This is not a surprise given other recent changes, but it definitely does lower the overall value of their partnership in my opinion.
TravelCon2 Vegas social events
If you are going to be in Vegas this weekend for TravelCon2 then here are some of the extracurricular events taking place. I am not sure which ones I will be able to make it to given the overall craziness of my schedule this weekend, but I am looking forward to meeting as many people as possible.
Luxury and loneliness: The dark side of business travel
Thankfully I don’t travel too much for work, however having just come off a stretch of 16 of 18 days on the road, I certainly understand and believe a lot of what is mentioned here to be true. I honestly am not sure I could handle a job where I traveled 50% or more of the time for work.
Great Deals
- Amex Offers is giving a $50 statement credit with a $100 or more purchase at Airbnb. Link the offer in your online account or tweet #AmexAirbnb. It works on gift cards, but there doesn’t appear to be a really big resale market for these gift cards so this is most likely best for personal use. Full terms here. You can also get $20 for signing up as a new member.
- Silvercar is offering a free day on rentals of 3+ days. The best part is this works for existing customers. To get the discount use the code FREEAFTER3. New members will probably want to go with the $100 off 2+ day rentals I wrote about the other day.
Have a great evening!

Really, you should know that it’s the airline we fly that determines how many miles we earn, not the program in which we’re members. So AA didn’t reduce the number of miles earned on deeply discounted fares flown on BA/IB, BA/IB did (in line with its own Avios earnings reductions). And if one flies those BA/IB metal flights with AA flight numbers, you’ll still get 100% mileage in AAdvantage since this is the current policy for all OneWorld AA code share flights. Now that policy may change when AA revamps its program next year as everyone expects, but for the moment AA hasn’t reduced the mileage on BA/IB flights…BA/IB did!
Shawn, PSA: the AMEX Airbnb GCs stmt credit not firing for GC purchases since AirBNB GC processing shares same 3rd party processor as Paypal (Braintree). AMEX has confirmed its denial on twitter and is not currently budging. Chat also notated my account but is NOT honoring the GC promo unless Airbnb merchant replaces Braintree as merchant after overnight processing. Will update your when I find out more.
Thanks for the update!
