No More 2% Prime Reloads On Amazon With A Debit Card

When you log into your Amazon account and go to the reload your balance screen you will be hit with some surprising news.  There will be no more 2% Prime reloads on Amazon starting July 28, 2021.

No More 2% Prime Reloads On Amazon

It does look like they are offering a $5 bonus on an auto reload so be sure to take advantage of that.  This is what they are trying to push people towards it would seem.

What Is Amazon Prime Reload?

Amazon launched this service a while back that would give you a boost to your balance for doing a Prime reload with a debit card.  If you loaded $100 into your account with your debit card you would end up getting a $2, or 2%, bonus added to it.  This was a way to encourage people to load their account with a debit card instead of a credit card so Amazon could save on the transaction fee.

Final Thoughts

I am a little surprised they are discontinuing the program since it likely saved them money overall with how high credit card transaction fees are versus debit cards. Maybe not enough people were using it to make it worthwhile to them.  I am sure many people load up their account with an Amazon Prime credit card for 5% back.

In the past Visa or Mastercard gift cards would trigger the reload bonus, since it would code as a debit card, but that stopped working about 6 months ago.  I will continue to purchase gift cards at office supply stores with my Ink Business Cash card for 5X Ultimate Rewards earnings for my personal purchases.  Just remember not to load too much into your balance because that will sometimes get your Amazon account shut down and your remaining balance locked up.

  1. I exclusively use Amazon GCs bought with Ink and at supermarkets with fuel rewards.

I also never get those $-off offers when paying with at least one MR.

Wonder if these two things are related.

    • I pay most of my stuff with gift cards and get those offers some of the time. So not sure if that helps decide or not haha
