Orbitz Paid for Most of Our San Francisco Hotel
A few weeks ago on Cyber Monday, Orbitz ran a huge sale. Teaming up with Visa Checkout, they offered $100 of a $100 or more booking! Better still, they allowed people to use the discount multiple times.
My wife and I are expecting a baby at the end of March so my opportunities for upcoming travel are quite limited. Fortunately, we did have one trip left for the year, a quick visit to San Francisco, which we just completed this past weekend.
The Search
Since I was able to use the discount multiple times, I searched for hotels in one-night increments and looked for something as close to $100 as possible. We also had our car, so free/cheap parking was a priority.
Fortunately I remembered that there are several nice motor lodges on Lombard Street in the Marina District. Since this area of San Francisco is on land fill, buildings aren’t permitted to be more than three stories tall, which prevents the takeover of luxury condos and other high rises.
While frantically searching on Cyber Monday (I knew the deal wouldn’t last long) I found La Luna Inn. Reviews were pretty good and the rooms have recently been renovated. Better yet, it was going for just north of $100 a night with free parking, which ended up being about $25 including taxes after the coupon.
Our Experience
This is the second time I have stayed in the Marina District and it was very nice. La Luna Inn was pleasant and the rooms were spacious. While the exterior screams motel, the rooms actually remind me of a nice Holiday Inns. Pretty nice for the price!
For those not familiar with the Marina District, it is close to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of Fine Arts. This area is also a nice 2 mile stroll from Fisherman’s Wharf and is well connected to public transport to reach other parts of the city.
As I wrote the other day, we also utilized Uber heavily during this trip to burn off our Amex Offers. We visit San Francisco often, but we were still able to find a few new things to try including visits to AT&T Park and Aquarium of the Bay at Fisherman’s Wharf.
Conclusion
In the end, this was a great trip. I highly recommend looking for La Luna Inn or similar motor lodges in the Marina District if you have a car and aren’t looking for anything too luxurious. The savings on parking alone are substantial!
