All About the Memories
I really love the title of this site. What came to me at 3am one morning in that name is the realization of what I believe. Life is about the memories created and not all about the process of earning the means to make them. This isn’t just some pie in the sky idea. It is how I have learned to live as a traveler the past decade.
For example, last year I wrote about a quick trip I made up to Salt Lake City with my friends. What was expected to be a simple weekend of coaster riding, turned into something I will never forget due to good company and the amazing beauty of one mountain. Some people don’t see the world that way. What a shame.
In the comments of that post one person said, “I’m happy for your deep introspective post, but maybe you should save to draft first. This has nothing to do with the purpose of traveling or providing any useful information for such.” If my memories and experiences that weekend have nothing to do with the purpose of travel then I have it all wrong.
My point is not to discount this person’s opinion, because it is absolutely valid. It 100% is. I disagree of course, but we can’t all agree about everything. I guess my point is to say I see things differently and hopefully you do to. With that said, I thought I would share a bit of who I am and what I believe. Watch this video I made for my Family Travel for Real Life presentation. It shows what life and travel are all about to me.
What does travel mean to you?

yes Yes YES
it’s so easy to get entitled, to take things for granted, to forget how lucky we are to travel and see new places, encounter new cultures, learn new languages (even a few words), taste new foods, and and and…
this is why this “hobby” drives so many of us. this is my personal reason for all the hours and hours of blog reading and learning learning, not to collect first class amenities bags (not judging those who do).s
so thanks Shawn, for this and similar posts, to remind of us of why you –and many of us– keep your eye on this Hobby ball 🙂
Thanks David!
[…] get way more hits on a post about saving literally a dollar or two than any of his trip reports (or awesome videos). Now I get it, people don’t really enjoy reading trip reports about the same places over and […]
The best part was the last scene. Exactly how any kid would react!
Not sure if you’re gonna get your present, dude! After dad posted this, it was the opposite of a present! 🙂
Long time subscriber, first time commenter. Really special video! I admire the the wealth and diversity of the experiences you’re giving your son. This is definitely the only blog I really ever read consistently! Keep it up Shawn!
Thanks Corey I truly appreciate it!
Can’t say enough . You’re on the right path . Really enjoyed that video.
Thanks Dalo!
Believe me Shawn, you’ve got it right. The memories are what it’s all about. The methodology of how we get there is secondary. Keep up the good work buddy!
Thanks Henry!
Love, love, love this!
I loved making it! Thanks Patty!

Love it…and love seeing your kid grow up through the years. and now, you are at the joyous teenage rebellion years!!!
Oh yeah! He is 15 now and that last video was just under two years ago. It has only gotten worse! 😉
That video captures what drew me to your site in the first place; traveling with your family. I hope you keep the posts about those trips coming!
Thanks David!

Beautiful post! Life is all about the memories you make. I think a lot of people don’t figure that out till they’re a bit older. I really get that. I’d rather spend my money on experiences and making memories through travel than on buying “stuff”. My motto regarding travel: Not doing things are missed opportunities to make memories in life. I’m so glad I found this “world” of travel lovers to teach me how I can do it too! Thank you and keep up the memories!
Thanks Carol!
