Trying To Breath In Space!

I woke up this morning, took one breath, and realized that my head cold had progressed quite a bit overnight. Sleeping outside probably didn’t help. My nose was stuffed, my chest congested and I was sore from head to toe. In addition, I kept waking up all night and didn’t get any quality sleep. I knew that the frantic pace of going up to the Kennedy Space Center and then driving four hours north to Savannah, Georgia wasn’t going to work. We decided to keep a slow pace today and see where it takes us. The first thing we had to do was tear down camp. Jasmine and I didn’t rush ourselves and did it at a leisurely pace. In fact, Jasmine did most of the work since I was just trying to get myself going most of the morning.

Because of our slow pace tearing down camp, we arrived at the Kennedy Space Center at 2pm. With only a couple of items left on our agenda from last time, this still gave us plenty of time. On the drive over, Jasmine and I decided that we would settle in Jacksonville, FL tonight which is about halfway between Kennedy Space Center and Savannah, GA. This was a good compromise since I didn’t feel like making the four hour drive to Savannah after walking around the Kennedy Space Center all afternoon.

We arrived at KSC just in time to catch the first IMAX film which was about the Apollo missions. It was an IMAX 3d film and the clearest 3d production I have ever seen. The picture quality was excellent as the film makers mixed in simulations of the Apollo missions with actual footage from the real deal. When the film ended, we went to a 20 minute show on NASA’s research into the origin of planets and the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. By NASA’s estimation we could be looking at about 250,000 planets capable of harboring life in the Milky Way Galaxy alone. If I remember correctly, the universe has several billion galaxies, so that leaves quite a large possibility of life elsewhere. After we learned that we might not be alone, it was time for the 2nd IMAX film, Space Station 3d.

Space Station 3d is an IMAX movie that was filmed completely by the astronauts on the International Space Station. It starts by showing the launch of the first piece of the International Space Station and then goes into the later missions which brought additional modules to the structure. The station slowly grew and was soon ready for permanent residents. We were able to see what life was like for the first two sets of astronauts and cosmonauts who each lived up on the station for four month a piece. Since the footage was actually shot in space, it was stunning. I haven’t seen anything like it. We definetely left the theater with a better visual understanding of what it is like to live in space. After the 2nd IMAX film was over we headed to the Rocket Garden to see some of the old retired NASA rockets.

It was now 5pm, so we departed Kennedy Space Center and went to the Astronaut Hall of Fame six miles down the road. This was our last stop before heading north to Jacksonville. The Astronaut Hall of Fame had some very interesting exhibits, including the actual command module from the Apollo 14 mission. The best part of the Astronaut Hall of Fame had to be the various simulators. One of the simulators allowed us to experience what it is like to be a jet pilot. In the G-Force Simulator we pulled up to 4Gs as we flew a jet up and down through the mountains. It can only be described as intense. In another simulator, Shawn Reece was able to experience what it was like to walk on the moon.

When we left Kennedy Space Center they provided us with a map to the local library in Titusville. I still needed to book a hotel online since we were camping last night and I didn’t have internet access. We always try to arrive in our destination with a hotel already booked for the night. It isn’t very safe to be wandering around a strange city aimlessly trying to get a hotel in the dark. When we left the Astronaut Hall of Fame I followed the map and found the library with no problems. After a minimal wait I was on the internet and quickly booked a room. We then got on the road to Jacksonville.

We arrived in Jacksonville at 9pm and got a quick bite to eat at a BBQ joint in our hotel’s parking lot before retiring for the night. Most of the day my nose was completely stuffed and my chest congested. I took some cold medicine tonight to help me sleep and I believe it will get better very soon. Tomorrow we are actually going to be leaving Florida for Savannah, GA. I can’t believe we have been in Florida for three weeks now! We are excited to see a new state.
