You Can Carry All 3 Chase Freedom Cards – They Are Considered Different Products
You are probably tired of reading about the Chase Freedom cards everywhere, trust me there is more to come too, but this one will be fun – I promise! TPG updated their post today that Chase has confirmed that the Freedom Card will be considered a different product from the upcoming Freedom Flex card. It was thought when the news first broke that the Flex would be considered the same product as the traditional Freedom card.
Why This Is Good News
This is big news for a few reasons. First, you can sign up for the Flex if you currently carry the old Freedom card (rumored to soon be discontinued). Secondly, the old Freedom card is still available for signing up right now.
That means that you could technically sign up for all 3 Freedom cards, which all come with a 20,000 point welcome offer. They each also offer 5x on $12,000 worth of grocery spend in the first year.
If you grabbed each version of the card and met the required spend for both offers you would be sitting on at least 240,000 Ultimate Rewards points. The crazy thing is you would pay $0 in annual fees for those points.
There Are Some Pitfalls To Be Careful Of
There are some potential issues to consider for this as well. You would have to be at 2/24 or less to be able to do it because of Chase’s 5/24 rule. And the offer would have to be available long enough for you to spread out your applications for all 3 cards. There is also a risk of Chase shutting you down for too many applications if you already have a few Chase cards etc. I don’t think many people will, or should, go for all three cards. There are simply too many pitfalls.
Having said that, I do think this means many people could end up carrying all 3. If you already have one version this means you are still going to be eligible for the other two. Or if you have two this means that you are still eligible for the third one etc. Essentially this has added another Ultimate Rewards earning card (with a premium card attached to your account) to your Chase options.
Final Thoughts
It is fun to play the what if game even if very few people will ever, or should, go through with it. Either way, the fact that you can carry all 3 Chase Freedom cards and they are considered separate products is good news for us. It means we have 3 options to choose from versus the 2 we thought we had a week ago. If you were going to try for the trifecta be sure to start with the classic Freedom card in case it does get phased out like it is believed to be. No one knows if it will be around in a few weeks from now.

True but this is good for anyone that can’t get a business card…which if you don’t have it already you are not getting it right now 🙂
$500 vs $200 too is much preferable 🙂
Correction, you would have 2x the limit for a Freedom and Freedom Flex, but the Freedom unlimited does not get 5x.
You are correct – it is getting the other 3X and 5X earning but not the rotating categories. I will update – thanks Jeremy.
Grocery stores sell gift cards Glenn. They often offer incentives for gift card buying as well. Anything from Home Depot to Disneyworld…
Mark, great idea, but who spends $36K on groceries? I imagine you’ll hear from someone with a family of 15, but seriously? Anyone who spends that much on groceries probably needs all the help they can get.
$3000/month in Visa gift cards would be a possibility.
You can run almost all of your spend through a grocery store if you want. They sell a lot of 3rd party gift cards and Visa gift cards that you could in turn use elsewhere etc.
