Amex Business Green Rewards Retention Phone Call
Our very own PDX Deals Guy let me know about his American Express Business Green rewards card retention phone call. He had previously downgraded to this from the American Express Business Gold card to reduce the annual fee.

He had forgot to call during the first 30 days after the annual fee posted. American Express does not issue refunds if it is past 30 days since the annual fee posted. PDX Deals Guy was relying on the charitable nature of American Express during this call since he could no longer get a refund.

Retention Offer
PDX Deals Guy was offered the following retention offer:
- 7,500 Membership Rewards points with no spending needed
This is a pretty good offer for a $95 annual fee card, especially since there is no spending needed. American Express had him dead to rights since he had no chance of getting an annual fee refund if he canceled the card.

Conclusion
What can we learn from this? It never hurts to call! You never know what you will get either.
American Express had no reason to offer a retention offer since PDX Deals Guy had passed the 30 day annual fee refund window. I am not sure if this is a standard offer or if it was available because his annual fee recently posted. It may be worth calling if you have the card to see if you can get the same offer even if your annual fee isn’t due yet.
The 7500 Membership Rewards points are worth an estimated $112.50 which makes it an ok deal for $95. The offer does offset the annual fee and allows for another year of Amex Offers for his card plus any employee cards on the account. When you add those two things together you have a profitable deal!
Has anyone gotten any good retention offers on this card lately, or any other American Express cards for that matter?

Thanks for the tip. It took a while to get to retention offer desk. Rep was really nice and tried to get me to sign up for the Blue Business Plus since it has no AF and gets 2x and the green only gets 1x. He then mentioned that I could also get a $50 credit to offset the AF on the Green Business or 7,500 MR points immediately. I took the points. He said that might be good because who knows if they will be offering a sign up bonus for the Blue since it’s approaching the 1 yr mark. In all it took 30 min but I got 7,500 points.
Nice – you could probably still product change to the Blue Business Plus once the points hit and then get the AF refunded too. An option at least.
Amex won’t refund the entire fee after 30 days, but it’s my understanding they will refund a prorated amount based on how many months you have left in the year when you cancel?
Any experience with that?
They stopped doing that a few years ago. After 30 days you will not get any sort of refund.
You can downgrade the card after 30 days and they will give you a prorated credit then for the difference. This card did not have a cheaper option to downgrade to. But let’s say you had the Everyday Preferred you could downgrade it to the Everyday card at 60 days etc. and you would get 10/12 of your annual fee refunded.
I was reminded when I called that there is no downgrade option for the Green Biz card. So that definitely left me at their mercy. But I happily took 7.5k MR.
