Amex Sending Out Small Credits On People’s Accounts ($5-$20)

Over the past few days I have seen multiple reports of Amex sending out random credits on people’s credit card accounts.  My wife received one on her Gold card for $15 and we had some comments in the Facebook group as well for various credits.  It appears that they are in the $5-$20 range.

Here is a list of the cards and credits I have seen so far:
  • $15 on Amex Gold (X2)
  • $20 on Delta Gold card
  • $15 on Blue Business Plus
  • $10 on unspecified card
  • Unspecified credit on Amex Gold
  • $5 on Gold

What Could This Be?

This could be because of shop small credits. The offer recently ended and some people had issues with credits posting properly at the end of the offer period.  My wife falls in the same boat as she did not get some credits that I thought she should have.

The amounts would fit with that theory well too.  Since the credits reported are in $5 chunks, the offer was for a $5 credit off a purchase of $10 or more, this seems to be the most logical conclusion.  This is not to be confused with $50-$100 credits that are posting after annual fees on some travel credit cards.

Final Thoughts

Even though American Express loves the clawback, even when they overcharge for it, they also tend to correct things when issues arise. It may take them months but they eventually get there.  The frustrating part is they don’t normally tell you it is coming and alert you to what they did weeks later via a letter.  I wish the communication aspect would be better so people aren’t left wondering what is going on.  But money is money, so I will take it!

  1. I got $5 on my gold but I got all my small business credit so it’s not that. Can’t wait for sh!**y amex to claw this back later. I wouldn’t put it past them.

  2. Yep, You are correct, (as usual) Mark! All amounts are multiples of 5. AMEX will sometimes take months to do credits or extra MR. It took over 3 months for me to get the Bonus MR from Amazon shopping from last fall.

  3. $15 here. I had disputed 3 charges for which the $5 shop small credit hadn’t posted.
this makes me square with amex and your theory corroborated.

  4. I had an unknown $5 to my Gold card as well.
It would make sense if it was the shop small since I was at $45 when the offer ended but had a few charges at a shop small designated merchant that didn’t post due to an address discrepancy with the merchant vs Amex.
