Barclaycard Reconsideration Line

Barclays has launched some pretty amazing business card offers over the last week. I know many people have been applying for one of the increased offers. And, I know almost as many have had their application go pending. So what do you do? Should you call the Barclaycard reconsideration line? I’ll give you the recon numbers for business and personal cards plus give you my standard dialogue for these calls. I’ll also show you how to check the status of your application online.

Barclay Card Application Rules

Before we get into reconsideration calls, and why you may not have been auto approved during your application, we should discuss Barclaycard’s application rules. Every bank has their own, unique set of rules when it comes to credit card applications. They can be internal rules they don’t publicize or known rules the reps will quote. Here are Barclaycard’s application rules:

Barclays Quick Hits On the Rules

  • Sensitive to recent inquiries.
  • Only 1 new card every 6 months.
  • 6/24 rule for Arrival Plus applications. (When it is available)
  • You can receive the welcome offer on the same card more than once.

Maximum Number of Cards

Barclays does not specify a maximum number of cards you can have. They operate by a maximum amount ($) of credit they will extend to you, based on credit profile. However, you cannot have more than 1 of the same card at the same time.

Shifting Credit Limits

Requesting to shift credit from other cards is possible if you were denied during an application. However, denials with Barclaycard are often based on other factors, so this might not help if your denial wasn’t strictly related to “maximum credit extended.”

Timing Of Applications

Barclays will only approve you for 1 card every 6 months. Other factors are more fluid, such as recommendations to use your other Barclays cards before a new application, but this rule seems fixed. The only card with a written rule on application numbers, though, is the Arrival Plus. If you’ve opened more than 6 cards in the past 24 months, you’re unlikely to be approved for the Arrival Plus card (currently unavailable).

Welcome Offer Eligibility

it is possible to receive points from a welcome offer on the same card twice. If you’ve had a card from Barclays in the past, you can’t receive a bonus from a welcome offer again within 24 months. Additionally, you should close that card and wait 6 months before applying for it again.

You can find every bank’s specific rules in our guide on application rules by bank.

Why Wasn’t Your Application Auto Approved?

There are many reasons that a credit card application could go to pending status rather than being auto approved. On the bright side, pending is better than an outright denial. Here are some of the reasons your application may have received that pending message:

  • Barclays has already extended you enough credit
  • They need to verify your personal information
  • They need to verify your business information
  • You have had a lot of recent applications they want to review
  • Your credit score is not in their ideal range
  • They have further questions about your credit report

These would be very similar reasons as to why you may get a pending message on a personal card application too.

Barclaycard Reconsideration Line Phone Numbers & What To Expect

Know that we know who is eligible for a new Barclaycard account, and why you may not have been auto approved, what do you do now?  You can wait for them to make a decision on their own or you can pick up the phone and try to get out in front of things.

Barclaycard Reconsideration Line

This is what I usually call and say:

I recently applied for XXXX credit card and saw that my application was pending further review. I wanted to see if there was any more information you needed from me or if we needed to move around credit from another card (assuming you already have one with the bank).

That will get the ball rolling. The recon rep will usually pull up the application and then ask you some questions about your credit report or your business. Sometimes it is as simple as them saying they needed to verify it was you who applied for the card. Offering to move credit is a feather in your cap for sure. A lot of denials are because a bank doesn’t want to offer you more credit. If you proactively offer to move some from another card from that same bank then they do not need to offer you any new credit. This is my most successful reconsideration call play.

Check Your Barclaycard Application Status

If you want to just check the status of your Barclaycard application you can do that online:

You can also try calling 888-232-0780 then dial 3 if that works better for you.

Barclaycard Reconsideration Line: Final Thoughts

Hopefully I have given you everything thing you need to turn that Barclaycard pending application into an approval. If nothing else at least you now know how to check the status of your application before you get the email of approval or the letter of denial in the mail. I think it is best to try to get out in front of things with Barclaycard. Just know that they are one of the tougher approvals out there. So don’t feel bad if it doesn’t work out for you this time around.

  1. A data point for less than 6 month per card.
Applied and received the Barclay AA Biz Mastercard on June 30th
Applied and received the Barclay Hawaiian Mastercard on Sept 30th.
I saw your blog after I applied and figured I was out of luck but 10 min after it went pending they called me, asked a few questions and approved. Needless to say I was surprised.

  2. Interesting – applied for a Carnival Mastercard and was declined due to a charge-off in 2009! Have perfect credit and substantial income since then. Can’t believe they would still hold that over my head from 13 years ago!

  3. My business aviator application went on pending.
I dont have any revenue so i marked it as $0.
Not sure if that caused this issue..
    Any suggestions?

    • Banks take on new businesses all the time so not sure if that plays a role or not. I would just call and see if they need more info etc.

      • I got a call from Barclays and they verified my income and the credit reviewer gave his initial approval for a 900$ credit limit pending further review from another department that will need to verify my business.
The agent said as my revenue was 0 he could not increase the credit limit any further

  4. […] Ok, I am in, time for some free AA miles to replenish the vault lol. You know, it is hard to say no to this: 80,000 AA miles and a $95 statement credit after spending $2,000 in 90 days. I was instantly approved for $12.600 credit line. Interestingly, my email address was still recognized from my Barclay Arrival card days. When my AA CitiBusiness Platinum Select card comes up for renewal, instead of playing the retention offer phone game and keeping it another year for a $1k spend or so…I will close it and move on. But I will be back later lol. Come to think of it, my wife will apply too shortly…you know, couples who churn together stay together woohoo! Well, in case this happens to you: Did Your Barclays Business Application Go Pending? Here Is What You Do. […]

    • This was the first time in 5 years with the Citi AA Biz card no retention or spending bonus offers (last year rep said I had held over 4 yrs so waived the AF tho rarely use the card other than to keep it active), so I canceled it & reapplied for the Barclays Biz. Personal cards with them go a lot smoother than business but eventually success.

  5. Was super concerned about applying for my first business card, Wyndham Rewards Earner Business, after reading a lot about the problems of others. I don’t have a current Barclays personal card. Applied this week, was given instant approval for $10k line. Just wanted to let folks know that this isn’t a guaranteed hassle and to take the leap!

  6. Called and approved for $650 on AA biz card LOL! I usually get a line of $10k-15k personally so they are really going low. They even said I would have to make multiple payments to hit the $2,000 spend in 3 months! Yeah no kidding! thanks for the info!
