BofA Alaska 40K Bonus Offer

A member in our Facebook Group just received the offer last night.

When it comes to the sheer number of miles, the Bank of America Alaska Airlines credit card never will be the champion. In the days of 100K bonuses, this card’s normal 30K bonus seems low on the surface, but as any experienced miles/points enthusiast will tell you Alaska miles are among the best around.

Many many people choose to apply for the standard 30K bonus (or the better version with a $100 statement credit), but now it seems to bank and airline are making it even better for some by sending out a 40K offer. Let’s take a look.

The Offer

Get 40,000 miles and buy one ticket, get one for just the taxes and fees after you make $2,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of your account opening.

Card Benefits

  • 3X miles for spend on Alaska and 1X everywhere else
  • Free companion fare every year
  • Free checked bag

Analysis

This offer seems to be targeted to West Coast residents and I have seen data points from people in California, Oregon and Washington who have received it. The offer comes via email and includes a link along with a code if you need to apply via the telephone.

Since you can get the 30K bonus with a $100 statement credit, you need to determine if the extra 10,000 miles is worth giving up the credit. I think Alaska miles are worth about 2 cents each, so I personally would go for the 40K offer if I was targeted. I do believe that this 40K bonus is the highest offered on this card since 2015 when a 50K targeted offer surfaced.

Conclusion

At some point over the past few years we have seen Alaska, Southwest and Delta all target West Coast travelers with increased offers of some kind. This market is competitive and Alaska is seemingly looking to keep their position as top dog on the West Coast.

  1. California resident – I received the 40k offer on Sept. 5 and received a reminder email today. What’s interesting is that the 9/5 email only says, “Every year, you’ll get Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare™, so you can bring someone with you from $121 ($99 plus taxes and fees from $22), with no blackout dates.” But the email today says, “Buy one ticket & get a second one for just the taxes and fees ($0 fare plus taxes and fees from just $22) after you make $2,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of your account opening.” But it does not say anything about subsequent years.

I have held this card before, but it has probably been well over 10 years since closing the account.

  2. As an avid churner, I have not been approved for this card in my last 3 apps. Are other churners able to get this? I’m around 16/24.

  3. Shawn, the lead sentence showing on the Boarding Area page says “A new targeted BofA Alaska 40,000 mile bonus is being sent out. With 25% more miles than the normal… Read More”

This bonus would be 33% more than the normal 30K.

  4. The court listener website didn’t have any updates on the docket for Ferrall v BANA. Usually they show any activity that occurred that day in court. I have been half tempted to go downtown and sit on on the proceedings since I am in San Diego. What in the hell could take so freakin’ long? I’m sure they just want to leàve the money in their bank and collect as much interest as they can. That way they end up paying out pennies on the dollar. Meanwhile, we sit waiting for the measley amount that they decide to give us after the lawyers grab their millions and run.

  5. Are you sure the new 40K bonus offer also waives the $99 companion pay the first year? Mine does not read that way.
