Chase Freedom Flex Offer Ending

One of the better offers of the last 6 months or so has been the increased offers on the Chase Freedom Flex and the Chase Freedom Unlimited cards.  They have come with the semi standard $200 (or 20,000 Ultimate Rewards points) after spending $500 within 3 months welcome offer. But, they also have been giving you 5% back (5X Ultimate Rewards) on up to $12,000 in grocery spend during your first 12 months of card membership.  That may be the best welcome offer we have ever seen for a no annual fee personal card.  Well our friend Derrick at Travel on Point(s) pointed out that this offer is showing an expiration date of January 13, 2022. That gives you only a few more days to scoop up this offer and you can rack up 9X Ultimate Rewards points along some of the way.

How To Unlock Ultimate Rewards With The Freedom Cards

The Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited are cash back earning cards. On their own they do not earn transferrable Ultimate Rewards.  You can cash out your “points” for a statement credit or deposit them into your bank account at 1 cent per point. You can also redeem them towards gift cards at around 1 cent per point.

If you do that you are missing out on a lot of value because Ultimate Rewards can be worth so much more when you transfer them to travel partners.  To be able to do that you need to have a Chase premium card that you can combine the points from your Freedom card(s) with. The premium card lineup Chase offers that allows this are the:

If you carry any of those three cards then you can move points from your Chase Freedom Flex, or Freedom Unlimited, to them and unlock transfer partners. Here is a guide on how to do just that.

By doing this you make the points you earn with your Freedom Flex / Freedom Unlimited more valuable. When you use transfer partners you can often get 1.5 cents per point or better (depending on the partner you use).

Stacking Offers For 9X Earning

There is a chance to stack deals and earn up to 9% back, or 9X Ultimate Rewards, if you sign up for the Chase Freedom Flex now. One of the great features of the Flex is the rotating 5% categories. Every quarter the Chase Freedom Flex releases a category, or categories, where you can earn 5% back on up to $1,500 in spend.  And wouldn’t you know, grocery is one of the categories for the Freedom Flex this quarter.

That category will stack with the current 5% back on grocery store spend welcome offer.  Because of that your first $1,500 of spend in the grocery category will actually earn 9% (9X).

  • 1% (1X) back on every purchase
  • 4% (4X) back on grocery store spend from the welcome offer
  • 4% (4X) back on grocery store spend from the 1st quarter categories
  • Total of 9% (9X) back at grocery stores

That is a great way to rack up Ultimate Rewards.  After the $1,500 in spend this quarter you would be net 33,500 Ultimate Rewards points, or $335 in cash back.  You would have triggered the 20,000 point welcome offer after $500 in spend within 3 months plus 13,500 points from 9X earning on $1,500 in grocery spend.

You would still have a chance to earn an additional 52,500 points on the remaining $10,500 in 5X grocery spend for the remainder of your first 12 months. That isn’t even including the other 3 quarters of 5% earning this year which could net you an additional 22,500 points. That is assuming you are able to maximize each quarter’s bonus category.  When you add all that up you would be sitting on over 100,000 points in the first 12 months of carrying the Chase Freedom Flex.

What If You Already Have The Freedom Flex?

This sounds great and all but what if you already carry a Chase Freedom Flex? Even if you have the Flex, or even the old discontinued Freedom card, you are still eligible for the Chase Freedom Unlimited. Lucky for us, they are considered separate products.

The Unlimited card earns 1.5% (1.5X) back on all purchases. It doesn’t have rotating 5% back categories each quarter but it does have the same 5% (5X) back on groceries on your first $12,000 in spend welcome offer. That is still an 80,000 point welcome offer if you maximize everything available to you. You would earn 60,000 points from the $12,000 in grocery spend and earn 20,000 points after spending $500 within the first 3 months. The card also earns 3% back at drugstores which may come in handy for some.

Chase Freedom Flex Offer Ending – Final Thoughts

My wife took advantage of this amazing offer when it first came out last year. It was one of the better welcome offers we have seen on any card, and probably the best ever on a no fee personal card. The fact that the Chase Freedom Flex welcome offer stacks with the current 5% quarterly category makes this even better. If you play it right you can earn up to 9% (9X) back.  When you pair the card with a Chase premium card, unlocking Ultimate Rewards transfer partners, it is even better.

Even if you currently have the Freedom Flex you are still eligible for the lucrative offer on the Chase Freedom Unlimited (and vice versa) offer.  If you were considering either of these cards be sure to grab them before they vanish on 1/13/22.
