Citi Executive AAdvantage Retention

Citi Executive AAdvantage Retention Offer

Yesterday I wrote about a strategy that I personally used to convert my Citi Executive AAdvantage card to a ThankYou Preferred. (See: Hacking Citi Product Conversions – Turn An Unwanted Card Into A Potential Points Machine)

I believe this conversion will be very beneficial to me in the long term given recent retention offers for that card. Only time will tell.

Retention Instead of Conversions

After writing about the conversion I heard from a few people who are interested in keeping their Executive cards. Many of these people expressed interest in retention offers since they don’t want to pay the hefty $450 fee.

When I made the call to close/convert my Citi Executive AAdvantage card, the representative only had one offer for me. I didn’t much care for it, but some people may find it of use.

The Offer & Analysis

Citi Executive AAdvantage Retention

Offer: Receive a $250 statement credit after spending $3,000 per month for 3 months.

This means shifting $9,000 in spend to offset only a portion of the annual fee. If Admiral’s Club membership means a lot to you, then perhaps this is a good offer since you can basically lower the annual fee down to $200.

Conclusion

While I still think my strategy as laid out yesterday is the best way to go, those who are looking to keep the Executive card have hope of getting at least part of the annual fee credit back.

  1. Just called for a retention offer and was given two options – neither are enticing. One is 5K in miles plus a $100 credit. Two is 15K in miles. I didn’t even pay attention to the spending requirements. I deferred and will decide later. I was looking for a $450 credit or more miles to make it worthwhile. I live in Orlando, where there is no lounge so the lounge enticement is minimal for me.

  2. I was given the same pathetic offer. Needless to say I canceled my card. I would rather put my charges on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card

  3. They offered me a $450 statement credit after 5k in spend per month for 3 months. It was intriguing to essentially get the card “for free” the rest of the year, but my flying on AA has been significantly reduced since when I opened to so I declined and closed.

    • That is a much better offer. Thanks for sharing the data point. It would absolutely make sense if you were a regular AA flyer since you could do the 40k to get 10k EQMs, but other than that there are better options.

      Thanks Mike!

  4. That was my offer too–I opted to go for it because I want the card; Not for the Admiral’s club but for the 10k in EQM
