Great News – CSR 5X Earning & Travel Credit Stack!
I wanted to put together a quick post on some good news that was shared in our Diamond Group. Chase recently made some pretty impressive short term changes to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.
A quick recap of the changes:
- Earn 5X on grocery purchase, up to $1500 a month for May and June.
- Use your $300 travel credit on gas or groceries till December 31st.
- Pay yourself back with your Ultimate Rewards points at 1.5 cents each on home improvement stores and grocery until September 30, 2020.
Those are all amazing offers but it left a few big questions unanswered:
- Will you still earn the points on the purchase if you pay yourself back with Ultimate Rewards points on it?
- Will you earn 5X points on your grocery purchase if it triggers the $300 travel credit.
It has already been confirmed that you still earn the points when you cash in Ultimate Rewards points to pay for the charge. They are considered separate transactions.
That left the travel credit question still unanswered though. I had assumed that the travel credit would not trigger the 5X points earning since you do not earn points on the travel credit when using it for travel. Facebook member Rena confirmed with me that you in fact DO earn points on the purchase even if the travel credit is triggered.
Final Thoughts
I assume Chase’s coding did not set it up the same way they do for the normal travel credit. This makes my thoughts on upgrading to the CSR card even stronger. Since I could easily knock off the travel credit and earn 5X points while doing it. If you have some of that travel credit left then I suggest you be sure to use it this month at the grocery store.

I don’t think gas is apart of the “pay yourself back” fyi….

Mark,
Since its automatic, how will I know if the travel credit is being used to cover my grocery purchases?
You should see the credit post shortly after the charge posts.
Pay Yourself also includes home improvement, including Home Depot and Lowe’s.
Whoops – forgot to add that in. Thanks Sam
