REDcard Debit Policy Confirmation
The game of manufactured spend moves quickly. New opportunities come and old ones end. Even with that the norm, the loss of debit loads to REDcard hurt a lot of people. It has now been about six weeks since it happened and American Express decided to make it official. Here is the email I just received:
We want to let you know that we are making a change to your Target Prepaid REDcard® by American Express, and you will no longer be able to add money from your debit card at Target stores. As always, you can continue to add money to your Prepaid REDcard by using:
• Your debit card online through your Account
• Cash at a Target Store
• Direct Deposit (You can automatically add all or part of your paycheck, government benefits and federal tax refunds to your Prepaid REDcard)For more information about your Prepaid REDcard, click here.
Thanks,The Target Prepaid REDcard® by American Express Team
A Final Confirmation
This email is actually similar to one that was sent well after they stopped allowing credit card loads. I’m not sure why it takes so long, but oh well. The real news here is that this is a final confirmation that in-store debit loads are gone and probably will not come back.
Some people had hoped that they would eventually bring back debit loads or that they would update their systems to make chip-enabled debit cards work better. I certainly didn’t think that would happen, but this email is proof that it probably won’t. Now I need to stop being lazy and switch this last REDcard over to Serve!
Conclusion
As we get ready for this crazy holiday weekend, just be grateful that you don’t have to go to Target to do end of the month loads at a time when everyone is doing their holiday shopping. Oh wait, you probably switched to Bluebird or Serve. Nevermind.

I got the same email today for my Amex for Target (not RedBird). I haven’t used that account in a while.
Meh – I’ll keep the redbird, the 5% discount and the drinks on the house. Now to figure what debit card to load it with. Time to get creative, but you know creativity can vary by regions. Nuff said.
