Amex SPG Offer & Why You May Want to Wait
Yesterday American Express made a slight change to the bonus structure on their Starwood Preferred Guest personal card. Before the change, the 25k bonus was paid out after $5k in spend during the first three months. Now that spend threshold has been lowered to $3k.
I know a lot of you struggle to hit minimum spend requirements, so a lowered threshold like this may be welcomed. Unfortunately there is a problem. SPG normally raises the bonus to 30k points around this time of year. In fact, last year the 30k bonus surfaced on May 31.
Now of course there is no guarantee that the 30k bonus will return this year, but it has surfaced every summer for as long as I can remember. Since you can now only get one bonus for the lifetime of a personal card, it may be a good idea to wait for a 30k offer.
Conclusion
Information is power and I just wanted to inform everyone of the possibility of a 30k offer coming soon. If you still think the lower spending threshold is appealing, then you really can’t go wrong with this card. Are you holding out for 30k or do you like the lower spending requirement? Let me know in the comments!

Wonder if I should speak to them. I’ve had my SPG for almost 1 cycle (25k $5k spend in 6 months..think I’ve only spent $2k and another $1.6k in a few weeks when my I watches are shipped. Not sure if they will do it though haha
It couldn’t hurt to ask, but since the only change is the spending threshold, my guess is they probably won’t do anything.
Any idea on how this relates to referral bonus’s? I can refer someone for 5k pts. 2 questions…
1) In the past, have we been able to refer someone (I get 5k) and the referee can still get the 30k bonus?
2) Can I refer someone to the 3k spending requirement application?
I believe the referral should be for the public offer which is $3k in spending. I don’t currently have the card, but you can check here: https://www262.americanexpress.com/business-card-application/raf/200002-CCSG
