American Express Credit Card Limit Increased 2021

American Express is one of my favorite card issuers simply because once you are in with them you tend to be in with them. They do have “once per lifetime” bonus rules and a lot of other quirks including their Rewards Abuse Team, but overall I think my relationship with them has been fruitful the past few years.

One area I am constantly hitting frustration though is with their card limits. Way back in the day American Express limited customers to holding just 4 credit cards. (Not including charge cards like Amex Platinum, Gold, etc. which have a separate limit of 10.) Then, they increased the limit to 5 before reducing it back down to 4 last May. Now apparently we are back up to 5.

Confirmation of Amex Credit Card Limit Increase

This increased limit has been reported in a few places, but I believe Walter Credit Card broke the news via Facebook. I have also been able to confirm with MtM Contributor @PDX Deals Guy he was approved for a 5th card yesterday. He had both the no annual fee Hilton and the Surpass plus the Blue Business Plus and no annual fee Delta cards. He was approved for the Bonvoy Business Amex as his 5th card.

At least for now it appears the American Express credit card limit is 5. That is big news and I suspect many of you may be picking up a new Amex card in the near future. 🙂

American Express Credit Card Limit Increased – Bottom Line

While the Amex credit card limit has changed back and forth a few times it is nice to see them loosening things up a bit for customers. I know I have a few cards I have been eyeing and this opens up the door for me to apply without having to cancel something else. Have you been approved for a 5th American Express credit card? “Let me add an interesting data point. I just applied for my sixth Amex Credit card, totally expecting to close one of my existing Amex card in order to open the new one. To my utter surprise I was instantly approved. I needed to call Amex for some other reasons, and I brought this issue(?) up. The representative seemed surprised as well and mentioned, while the limit is 5 for most of the people, it could be lower or higher for some of the customers depending on the relationship. I guess I lucked out!

However, contrary to the experience you faced, I have Green Biz as well, but that wasn’t considered as a Credit card. Aside from this Green Biz card, I now have 6 open Amex Credit cards.”
