Amex Blue Whole Foods

Up to 7% Cash Back with Amex Blue At Whole Foods

I have written before how valuable the “Old” Amex Blue card is. After you spend $6,500 per year on the card, it pays 5% cash back at grocery stores, drug stores & gas stations. Well for a limited time American Express is offering a bonus 2% cash back at Whole Foods for Amex Blue cardholders. This means that the “Old” Amex Blue card will earn up to 7% cash back at Whole Foods through February 15, 2015!

While the terms and conditions page of this offer is really long, it basically says you will earn 2% cash back above the normal cash back earned on your version of the Blue Cash card. The three versions which are eligible are the: Blue Cash (Old Amex Blue), Blue Cash Preferred and the Blue Cash Everyday.

In order to be eligible for the offer, you must register before any additional cash back will be paid. You can register for the offer and see all of the applicable terms on the promotion page.

Amex Blue Whole Foods Promotion – Analysis

Amex Blue Whole Foods offer confirmation.

I am honestly not sure what gift cards are sold at Whole Foods stores. While I shop there on occasion, it has been awhile since my last visit. Considering this promotion runs through the middle of February, I will take my Old Amex Blue card and take a look at which gift cards are available.

If you shop at Whole Foods, then this is a no-brainer. With the Old Amex Blue card, you can earn up to 7% cash back on all purchases after you hit $6,500. If you aren’t a big spender, then the Blue Cash Preferred will pay 8% at Whole Foods up to $6,000 per year. Either way it is best to register for the promotion if you have one of these cards, just in case you shop at Whole Foods later.

This promotion is just another example of how aggressive American Express is being right now. While they don’t have any current Amex Offers for Whole Foods, it is a good idea to look out for them to maximize this savings even further in the future. Either way, make sure to register for this promotion and look for any upcoming Whole Foods promotions to stack it any further. Happy Savings!

  1. Although I love Whole Foods’ food, I usually go across the street to Trader Joes because it’s so much cheaper! I did venture to WF the other day though, because of the 8% CB (still didn’t make it a better deal than TJs though). No gift cards other than WF own (at least at our location). Got some expensive protein powders though:)

  2. You constantly come up with useful content. Thanks……………………lets see how long before every other blogger use it.

  3. You are correct. For the first $6,500 in spend on the card, you get 1% back at gas, grocery and drug stores and .5% back for everything else. After you hit $6,500 then you get 5% back in the bonus categories and 1% back on everything else.

I will update the post to be clearer about that. Thanks Grant!

    • The only gift cards wholefoods sells is its own, so this is great for “real” wholefood use, but cannot be used more widely.

    • No problem. I have only had my Old AMEX Blue for a few months, so I am the new kid on the block. Just wanted to make sure what i had in my head was right. I just signed up my BCP and Old Blue cards fro the promos. Please let me know if there are any gift cards worth getting at Whole Foods. Thank you 🙂

  4. @Shawn – T&C say that ” Eligible purchases do not include the purchase of traveler’s checks or the purchase or reloading of prepaid cards or other cash equivalents”, so it may be a YMMV situation for gift cards

    • You are correct, however every Amex Offer and every card’s terms & conditions generally say that. In my experience every purchase should count or at least has with previous deals. Of course the only way to really know is to go out to Whole Foods. Thanks!

  5. Great find Shawn, thanks for sharing. “After you spend $6,500 per year at grocery stores, drug stores & gas stations, it pays 5% cash back.” – I thought it was after any spending, but I guess I was wrong, it has to be in those categories to count for the $6,500?
