An Additional Discover 5% Cash Back Bonus
Update: While several people I know have received the offer, at least one reader reports it doesn’t show for them. It may be targeted. Thankfully a reader sent me a work around which still works on accounts which were not targeted. Details here.
There are currently three cash back cards with 5% rotating categories. Last week I covered in detail the 4th quarter bonus categories on the Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend & Discover It. Each of these cards have different categories that earn 5% cash back during the 4th quarter on up to $1,500 in purchases.
Discover seems to be taking 5% to the next level with a second concurrent bonus. I am not sure if this is targeted or not, but when I logged into my account, it showed another set of Discover 5% bonus cash back. For this second offer (shown above), I get to choose a store at which to earn 5% cash back on up to $1,000 in purchases through November 30, 2014.
As you can see, this Choose a Store bonus is completely seperate from the normal Discover 5% cash back. Combined, I can earn 5% cash back on up to $2,500 in purchases! While in a perfect world I could choose any store at which to earn 5%, Discover gave me six options. I can choose: Applebee’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowe’s, Olive Garden, Shell or Walgreens.
For some, Walgreens will allow the purchase of gift cards with credit cards. Lowe’s and Shell may also allow this as well, however every store is different. Most of these stores in my area do not allow the purchase of Visa/MC gift cards with credit cards, so I may not be able to maximize the bonus as well as some others.
Conclusion
With American Express really stepping up their game again with Small Business Saturday, it is nice to see Discover come out with yet another bonus to compete. The Discover It is one of the few cards I would sign up for that doesn’t pay an up front bonus, precisely for the 5% categories, their shopping portal and other bonuses like this.
