The End of REDbird Credit Card Loads
Note: As of October 13, 2015 the Target REDcard (REDbird) can only be loaded with cash in-store at Target. This means that neither debit cards nor gift cards can be used to load REDcard any longer. For more info about the changes and where to go from here, see: REDbird Postmortem: An MS Path Forward
I have been seeing reports all morning of a supposed memo stating that Target will no longer be accepting credit card loads to REDbird as of tomorrow. First I saw this news on Twitter and it was also discussed in the Saverocity Forums.
Now Dan over at Dan’s Deals is reporting that he has confirmed the existence of the memo and that this is a new nationwide policy that will begin tomorrow.
Dan has been around a very very long time and I definitely trust that he isn’t making this up. According to reports, cash registers will be hardcoded against accepting credit cards. Lets pray that pin-enabled gift cards will work as debit like they do at Walmart!
This story is developing and I will post more as soon as I know more. I’ll be heading out to my local Target in a bit to see if I can find out more about this memo. In the mean time, make sure to load your full $2,500 today if you need to!

Can a target that has never sold/carried a redcar still load htem?
Yes all Targets in the United States should be able to load them. Where I live in Las Vegas the product has never been launched, but every store is able to load them just fine.
If a taget does not carry(has has not sold to dat) Redcards can they still load them?
It’s my understanding that they can be loaded at any Target.
Still haven’t gotten a Redbird card. Looks like I missed the boat. But I can’t see why they would stop allowing gift card loads. Doesn’t Amex allow it with Bluebird and Serve?
Oh, wait. I just reread the article. It was a Target memo, and not an Amex memo. Fingers crossed.
Yeah, gc run as debit I’m sure won’t be an issue because it’s not an expensive option for them. On that same note, it’s also not really worthwhile for us because you can load Serve w/ 5k mo limit as well AND have your online cc load limit.
Right now, my best two cards are my Chase Freedom and BoA rewards. Tried for the coveted Sapphire Preferred, but got turned down. At the moment, I’ve been buying the Visa Gift gift cards (along with everything else) with the Freedom, then paying off the card regularly, so I can show a lot of activity and responsible usage. I’m hoping Chase sends me a Sapphire offer before long. The $500 gift cards are $4.95, and the money orders I buy with the cost less than a buck. So I’m pretty much breaking even for now, while learning the game. Once I finally get the Sapphire, I can start playing with the big boys. 🙂
Btw, I did have a Serve card, but since they limited il them to only Amex loads, I closed it and ordered a Bluebird. As soon as it arrives, I’ll begin loading it with gift cards instead of money orders.
Even with the loss of softserve it’s still a $1k cc limit and you can use FIA Amex for $20/mo per account. Wife and I would make it $40. Far cry from RB but right now, if that memo is true, beggars can’t be choosers and I’ll have to switch back with my loss of softcard limits.
Definitely not the news I was hoping for. Obviously I know it’s part of the game, but I’m REALLY kicking myself for ditching softcard last month in my wife’s name. We’ve now both lost the extra $500 serve limits if we switch back.
Any idea if this affects the Amex for Target card as well?
That is one of the big questions. According to what I have heard about the memo it pertains to REDcard only, but we will have to see what happens when the registers are updated.
Considering this comes on the heels of the Serve w/ amex only loads, it leads me to two thoughts.
1. Maybe it’s related (same platform after all) and means AFT won’t be impacted.
2. Wishful thinking, but maybe they’ll allow amex branded cc loads.
Good. I just wonder what took so long?
Good? Why are you even following this site if you think such news is good?
He is just a troll/a sad, lonely, old man. I’ve seen him trolling all over boardingarea for a couple of years now.
Don’t encourage him, He’s been whining about MS for years. It’s obviously beneath him.
There goes the Neighborhood! Please keep us posted Shawn. Thanks
