I Spent How Many Nights in Hotels in 2021? Let’s Look

I Spent How Many Nights in Hotels in 2021? Let’s Look

I’ve taken several big trips throughout the year, as well as several smaller trips, resulting in a lot of nights in hotels in 2021. This year in particular, I lived on the road for quite a while, and you can follow part of that journey starting on this page. Here’s a look at how many nights I spent in hotels in 2021, plus what I got from all of those nights.

Hotel Stays by Loyalty Brand

Best Western – 3 nights

I spent the following nights at the following hotels:

  • 2 Best Western Premier Grand Canyon Squire Inn (review)
  • 1 Best Western Aurore Paris

I paid for these using the bonus points from opening the Best Western Rewards Premium Mastercard.

Choice Hotels – 4 nights

I spent the following nights at the following hotel:

  • Arctic Comfort Hotel in Luleå, Sweden

Hilton – 21 nights

I spent the following nights at the following hotels:

  • 1 Tru by Hilton Denver Airport
  • 1 Hampton Inn Denver Airport
  • 3 DoubleTree by Hilton Sao Paulo Itaim
  • 3 DoubleTree by Hilton St. John’s Harbourview
  • 3 Hampton Inn & Suites Mexico City
  • 3 Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort (review)
  • 4 Hilton Garden Inn Tuxtla Gutierrez
  • 3 Canopy by Hilton Sao Paulo Jardins (review)

I also had 18 rollover nights from 2020, since Hilton rolled these over for everyone. I also carried over my Diamond status (top tier). Plus, Hilton will roll over my stays from 2021 into 2022, so I’m well on my way to more Diamond status in the future.

Hyatt – 50 nights

I spent the following nights at the following hotels:

  • 4 Park Hyatt Zanzibar (review)
  • 1 Hyatt Place Bogota
  • 2 Hyatt House Jersey City
  • 3 Wyndhurst Manor & Club (review)
  • 2 Hotel 50 Bowery (review)
  • 3 Hyatt Residence Club Breckenridge (review)
  • 2 Hyatt Regency Orlando (review)
  • 2 Hyatt Rosemont (review)
  • 2 Hyatt Place Tucson
  • 3 Hyatt Centric The Pike Long Beach (review)
  • 2 Grand Hyatt Denver (review)
  • 2 Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos (review)
  • 3 Hyatt Place Los Cabos
  • 2 Hyatt Regency Vancouver
  • 4 Hyatt House Mexico City Santa Fe
  • 3 Hyatt Regency Casablanca
  • 2 Hyatt Regency Tashkent
  • 3 Hyatt Regency Dushanbe
  • 1 Hyatt Regency Bishkek
  • 4 Hyatt Place Dubai Jumeirah

I also had 12 stay credits from the Bonus Journeys 2020 promotion, so these rolled over as nights toward my 2021 progress. This put me above 60 nights and gave me access to multiple benefits from the Hyatt Milestone Awards. I also earned top-tier Globalist status pretty early in the year, due to reduced requirements. This provided a lot of perks and upgrades during these stays and will last through all of 2022.

Marriott – 46 nights

I spent the following nights at the following hotels:

  • 13 Four Points by Sheraton Arusha (long stay due to getting Malaria, which I wrote about here)
  • 3 Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Hurlingham
  • 9 Sheraton Quito
  • 1 Walt Disney World Swan (review)
  • 2 Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire (review)
  • 2 Westin Harbour Castle Toronto (review)
  • 3 Sheraton Tunis (review)
  • 2 Le Meridien N’Fis Morocco
  • 2 Sheraton Grand Conakry
  • 3 Protea Hotel Livingstone (review)
  • 1 Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi (review)
  • 3 Four Points by Sheraton Lahore (review)
  • 1 Karachi Marriott
  • 1 Four Points by Sheraton Cancun

I also had a 25 nights deposit bonus from Marriott, which we reported on here. Additionally, I have 30 nights’ head start each year from holding a personal and a business credit card with Marriott. Thus, I wound up at Titanium Elite status without really intending to this year.

Hotels.com – 12 nights

I also spent the following paid nights booked via Hotels.com:

  • 2 Intercity Curitiba Batel
  • 3 Radisson Hotel Curitiba
  • 2 Hotel L’Adagio Libreville Gabon
  • 1 Room Hotel Niamey
  • 2 Hotel Imperio Bissau
  • 2 B2 Self Catering Apartments Serrekunda Gambia

The Hotels.com loyalty program is a bit of a dark horse but can offer good value at times. Through promotions offering up to 30% off, stacking free night awards, and using “double stamp” opportunities, I was able to really reduce my costs when needing to pay cash.

Airbnb – 5 nights

I also had a stay booked via Airbnb for our time in the Galapagos, which you can read more about here.

  • 5 Puerto Ayora Galapagos

Total Count – 141 hotel nights in 2021

Additionally, my wife and I spent 4 nights in an RV visiting national parks in Canada back in August.

Final Thoughts

Since there are 365 days in 2021, this amounts to roughly 39% of the year sleeping in a hotel (not counting the RV nights). I hadn’t planned for that. In some ways, it was great, but it was rough in others. Not all of the hotels were winners, either. I clearly spent a lot of nights in hotels during 2021, and I’m a very lucky person to be able to do all of this with points and miles.

  1. Nice to know that there is no pandemic where you guys are. So crazy how people don’t give a crap about others.
