Mercedes Benz Amex Platinum Discontinued

Back on March 8 we reported that the Mercedes Benz flavor of the American Express Platinum card along with the non-Platinum card are being discontinued. On their site it says the following:

Please note that the American Express and Mercedes Benz Card program will end in January 2019. Applicants can continue to apply for the Platinum Card from American Express exclusively for Mercedes-Benz, but if approved, the Card will be replaced with a different American Express Card at the time when the Card program ends.

At that time we didn’t know when new applications would stop being accepted, but we may now have a clue. Frequent Miler and Doctor of Credit are reporting that links have already started to disappear. A rumor on Reddit also states that applications for the card will end after today 3/31/18.

Should You Apply?

Since today is possibly the last day to apply for this card (and even if its not the links most likely won’t last), you might want to consider applying. The card does carry a $550 annual fee, but here is what you’ll get that first year:

  • Sign-Up Bonus: 60,000 Membership Rewards after $5,000 in spend during the first 3 months
  • Travel Credit: $200 per calendar year (double dip with $200 in 2018 and $200 in 2019)
  • Uber Credit: $200 total. $15 monthly credit & $35 in December. Works on Uber or Uber Eats
  • Other Benefits: Hilton Honors Gold, SPG/Marriott Gold, Car Rental Status, Platinum Concierge, Priority Pass lounge access, Centurion Lounge access and more

You also get a $1,000 Mercedes Benz certificate each year you make $5,000 in purchases on the card.

Here is a known working application link. It is not an affiliate link.

My Results

While I have a Business Platinum card, I also decided that it wouldn’t be a bad decision to apply for this card given that it is going away and I have never had it before. American Express limits you to one bonus per product per “lifetime” so for me it made sense to get the bonus before it disappeared. Plus, the personal and business Platinum cards have slightly different benefits so it isn’t a complete duplication.

Even though I have had a regular personal Platinum card before, numerous data points indicate that the Mercedes Benz card is treated as a separate product and thus I should receive the bonus. Because of this, my wife and I both applied for the card this morning. Without even a hard pull, we received the following:

While a 60,000 point bonus on the Platinum isn’t normally exciting, given the disappearance of this card I think its worth a consideration. Yes, the $550 annual fee is a bit steep, but between the bonus along with Uber and travel credits I’ll do alright, plus I definitely will enjoy some of the other benefits as well.

Did you decide to pull the trigger on this card recently or are you focusing on other ones? Share your experiences in the comments!

  1. Glad I saw your post on the day of expiration. Decided to pull the trigger, although, I already have the personal and business platinums, the 60K sign on was good enough. Wasn’t an instant approval, but I received the approval email today, 4/2/18.

  2. However, Amex has become a lot more strict about “gaming,” and they reserve the right to clawback the bonus for canceling or downgrading within the first 12 months, correct? So the only way to be sure that won’t happen is to keep the card for 13 months, meaning paying the annual fee twice, right?
